Quality, Honesty and Dependability Since 1924
Our history begins with the founding of the Phillips Roofing Company in 1924 owned and operated by Theodore John Phillips, the maternal grandfather of Merrill Thomas Jr. Mr. Phillips opened his roofing business at 9 S. Greene St. Baltimore, Maryland and continued on in that location until 1960. The growth of his company and his expansion into other services beside roofing required the need for a larger location and the company moved to 4721 Liberty Heights Avenue also in Baltimore. As his business flourished, Mr. Phillips continued to fulfill his passion for writing poetry.
He sponsored and hosted one of Baltimore’s most popular radio shows on Sunday afternoons called Ted Phillips and the South Sea Islanders. During his show Mr. Phillips would recite his original poetry, accompanied by the soothing sounds of the South Sea Islander trio.
Unbeknownst to many, Mr. Phillips is known to have coined the term home improvement used to describe the services of his company. His reputation of quality in service and truth and honesty was well respected and known among his customers, employees, listeners and peers. This commitment to quality led to many referrals and repeat business. His business remained prosperous until his death in 1976. His wife, Elsie Phillips, along with her grandson, Merrill Thomas Jr., carried on the business until 1980.
Upon her retirement, Merrill Thomas Jr. open his business, The Thomas Roofing Company Inc. based in Westminster with the same family values and commitment to excellence instilled in him by his grandfather. The tradition lives on in Thomas Roofing as Father and daughter, Brienne Gebhart continue the legacy.
