Understanding how your roof works can help you better plan for your roof replacement. The Thomas Roofing Company, Inc., your trusted roofing contractor, can help with all of your roof replacement needs. To help you plan for and learn about the details of your project, we’ll discuss the difference between a closed valley and an open valley in a roof replacement project.
The valley of a roof handles a large amount of water run-off. There are two approaches when it comes to making a roof valley when replacing a roof: installing a closed roof valley or an open roof valley. When installing a closed valley, the roofer will cover the roof with underlayment. They’ll then install the shingles onto the roof deck, extending them through the valley. The shingles will act as the valley lining and will protect the roof deck and underlayment against water run-off.
When installing an open valley, the roofing company will add another layer of lining to the roof valley. After covering the roof with underlayment, they’ll then install a pre-bent metal valley lining in the valley area. Next, they’ll install the shingles onto the roof deck, but they won’t run them through the valley area. They’ll also avoid nailing the shingles through the metal valley lining. They’ll then cut the overhanging shingles out of the valley area, opening it up and exposing the metal valley lining.
Factors to Consider When Installing Closed or Open Valleys
As an experienced roofer, The Thomas Roofing Company considers several factors when choosing whether to install open valleys or closed valleys. Open and closed valleys each have their own pros and cons, and we decide which to install based on the roof’s overall design, functionality, aesthetics and cost. In addition, we also take the roof’s overall appearance and the homeowner’s budget into account.
